Senior Safety Engineer

Our Client is looking for a Senior Safety Engineer, on a contract basis, location in Aberdeen.
Work closely with the Company’s engineering, projects, drilling, wells and operations groups to ensure that a comprehensive advisory service is provided which takes into account specific engineering constraints. Will be required to travel to offshore and onshore operational sites as part of their duties to conduct safety briefings, safety engineering studies, assurance activities and major accident hazard prevention communication activities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high awareness of industry and professional best practice through effective networking, professional organisations, journals, etc.
  • Provides technical safety/ safety engineering expertise and advice to CNS Field Operations, Performance & Growth, Geosciences, Wells Construction & Maintenance teams and Geosciences.
  • Responsible for providing technical safety/ safety engineering support to site based HSE professionals and working with them on common objectives.
  • Responsible for the input of Health and Safety objectives into the annual asset HSE improvement plan.
  • Responsible for the input of Health and Safety audits into the annual asset audit plan through a risk-based assessment looking at areas such as legal compliance and incident trends.
  • Develops specification, ToR and SOW for specific Asset safety engineering studies.
  • Participates in safety engineering related incident investigation and RCAs providing expert knowledge and direction.
  • Responsible for Combined Operations notifications and associated studies
  • Responsible for initiating and managing the Safety Case Thorough Reviews.
  • Responsible for management and maintenance of the asset safety cases.
  • Chairs HAZOP, HAZID and ORA meetings.
  • Offshore Visits in support of Asset specific deliverables

  • Liaise/communicate with external stakeholder where required.
  • Supporting the HSE Central Department Integrity & Verification Engineers with:
  • Identifying, risk ranking, recording, mitigating, monitoring and resolving major integrity threats for the Asset in the Company Technical Integrity system in order to provide management visibility on their timely resolution.
  • Monitoring the Integrity KPIs for the Asset, raising concerns when negative trends are observed and assisting the Asset with the development of improvement plans where applicable.
  • Participating in the Technical Integrity Review Team meetings and progressing the resolution of major integrity threats and verification findings.
  • Preparing and / or collating the Asset specific slides for the Integrity & Major Risk Board Meetings.
  • Participate in the preparation of the 6 monthly Integrity & Major Risk Reports and DIG review slides for submission to Headquarters HSE and DIG NSR
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with legislation, regulatory requirements and Company rules related to safety engineering and integrity within the asset.
  • Responsible for providing specialist direction in technical safety and integrity matters.
  • Responsible for the technical content of safety engineering related documentation for the asset (Safety Cases and supporting studies, COMOPS notifications, technological risk assessment, well risk assessment etc)
  • Responsible for safety review of plant modifications and promoting engineering best practice and apply and maintain company technical principles.
  • Responsible for ensuring major hazards and integrity threats are identified, adequately assessed, evaluated and managed in accordance with relevant statutory, group and corporate requirements.

Education, Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant and appropriate major accident risk industry experience (oil and gas / chemical / nuclear, etc.)
  • Educated to degree level in a scientific discipline and preferably hold or working towards a Master’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Can demonstrate comprehensive safety engineering related knowledge of current and emerging UK regulatory requirements and oil and gas industry trends.
  • Thorough knowledge of risk assessment techniques and experience of organising and where appropriate, facilitating/chairing HAZOP, HAZID, safety engineering risk assessments and reviews.
  • Commitment to develop technical expertise through attending external courses and conferences, and continual self-learning.
  • Can demonstrate audit and assurance activity capability in MAH management.
